Thanks for this information. It really does make sense given that Cierpinksi was a former steeplechaser who entered his first marathon "on a whim" in 1974. And it really sucks that Cierpinksi won again in 1980 - the only person besides Abebe Bikila to win 2 Olympic marathons. What an insult to the memory of Bikila who died so tragically young. I wonder who on the East German team wasn't taking drugs back then - the gymnasts perhaps? Thanks ago for this very interesting info.

Although not a great book, Faust's Gold goes into some detail on the East German doping machine and looks into some of the records that Dr. Franke uncovered. Though there isn't a direct line with Cierpinski's name and listed drugs next to it, when Franke deciphered the coding books, it seemed quite apparent that Cierpinski had blood doped, and used small amounts of steroids at the time.

In 1997, Shorter, convinced that Cierpinski had taken prohibited drugs, wrote to Dr Werner Franke, the German scientist who helped uncover the file. Franke provided Shorter with evidence that Cierpinski had indeed been taking steroids.

How was he cheated? I thought that the rainy weather in Montreal hampered him. Was Waldemar Cierpinski ever involved in any doping allegations? I know Cierpinski was East German but never heard of any drug implications for the East German men (that seemed to involved exclusively the women's teams). Any info you can provide would be interesting.

Shorter won silver in 1976 and Joan Benoit won the inaugeral women's gold medal in 1984. Other than a bronze medal in 2004, it's been kind of a dry run for the Yanks.

Who ever said it, it was highly unlikely Shorter could hear him. I was just a little kid when this happened and even I thought it was kind of a silly remark, given that Shorter was in front of thousands of screaming fans and the ABC crew wasn't in earshot.

They made front page of The Guardian today. Four out of the six finished in 5h 24min: well done guys! Isaya felt ill after 12 miles and left with another warrior. I understand he received hospital treatment and I hope is now OK. The 4 finishers were interviewed briefly on BBC yesterday and did not look tired at all.

our prayers go out to the family of the runner that sadly passed away. this was to be my hubby's first marathon (at the age of 51!) i secretly planned to pace him in at mile 20 (archer-chinatown) marker and bought my own bib and picked up my packet with his at the expo last friday....his 15K Pace 12:41, Half Pace 13:16, TIME Chip Time: Clock: Pace: 13:45. maybe next year?

thank you to the volunteers, fire and ambulance and the spectators who helped out and supplied me/us with their own water and gatorade...as for this video...it is kinda propaganda...it must have been put together by the race organizors..they make it seem like there was plenty of fluids on the course and that it was well organized...anyone who ran it knows the reality...you had to fight to get a cup, let alone something to put in it...it was a war zone out there
