Its because they tuned them in a non tradition way. Rather than being tuned EADGBe, the guitars on this song are tuned F#F#GGAA. Nirvana didn't expirement as much as this, they tuned to a drop D on occasion (DGCFAD) and one time by accident a whole step lower, on blew.
