I must say, in defense of Byron Janis, that he was playing under a time constraint on the old Bell Telephone Hour back in the 60's. That's why there is a hazy look and why there is no appause. Also he had to really rush through that last cadenza so that the network would not run over. Please listen to his recording with Charles Munch. Better than his other recording with Antal Dorati. He doesn't rush, although he is extremely virtuosic.

byron ferguson has a book called "become the arrow" which is all about his style of shooting. Its quite good. Yes, aerial targets have to be shot instinctively. It takes a lot of practice and time at the bale to get good form and consistency down. The objective is to become consistent enough to hit whatever you look at basically.
