Yeah, I'm a coach now, and you're right- the new vault is much more friendly! :-) We didn't make up our own routines either- these were the compulsory routines for level 5 at that time. I liked them though! I think some things are harder now but some where harder then.

It took me a little over a year to go to level 5. I started gymnastics when I was 11 and went straight to level 4 after about a month of recreational classes. Then I competed one season of level 4 and went right to level 5. I was just lucky because I already knew a lot of skills before I started gymnastics! :-) Most people don't move that fast.

Poor you. You had to vault on twinkies. Our vaults in gymnastics these days are easier for our hands to locate. Also, we didn't get to make up our routines in level 5. Are you still in gymnastics? I joined 4 years ago. Now I'm an optional. Your vid was really cool. I also think that old school gymnastics was harder than today's gymnastics.

Well, I did compete in the AAU "Ladies Division" this past season just for fun (it's kinda designed for retired gymnasts), but I didn't do many difficult skills. I've got other videos up of that. I have to take a break because I'm pregnant now! :-)

hahaha ohh memories from the 90's.. i remember i used to think it was so cool when i did it but looking back on it that floor routine they made us do was pretty terrible haha.. between the choreography and the music it was just bad haha for levels 4, 5, and 6.. the ones now are so cute! i wish i was a kid now so i could do them instead!

Actually, she's funny like that... she always smiles if she's scared, but it's because we don't allow any irrational fears, so she knows she shouldn't be scared if I (her coach) tell her she's ready. I had some of the girls I coach video taping, and they accidentally had the camera turned off for my floor routine, so I only have a couple of my warm-up tumbling passes. This is my first meet and the first qualifier! Only had a few practices, so be easy on me! I'm better at coaching than doin'...now that I'm old!!

Wish you were here too b/c we always want more old people with us, lol! :-) Straddle backs from the back, huh? I've always spotted from the side b/c that's how my coach spotted mine. I hold the wrist so they don't peel off, and push the hips up for height. I'd like to see the other way though!

god that looks like so much fun. i miss gymnastics. wish we had a rec league or something around here for old people like myself. i get to mess around in the gym sometimes with the athletes, but i don't get to "train" like i wish i could...and, it's interesting the way you spot straddle backs...i've never seen anyone spot from the side - i always spot from behind kind of...hard to explain

Thank you, James! There is a qualifying meet in a week (to qualify to the state competition), so we're probably going to do that one and see how it goes. I might not compete all events yet, but if I don't, I can't qualify, so we'll see! :-) I'm sure we'll video that, so I'll post it if we do.

lol, that wasn't the grips squeaking, but thank you for the compliments! That was just the bar set squeaking, but I know what you mean about not wetting the grips. Several of our girls just got new grips and they squeaked like crazy until they finally put water and chalk on them (and used the grip brush). :-)

Nope your not to old, As long as you don't plan on like making it to the olympics. I use to do gymnastics when I was 8-10 yrs (I had a late start because of cancer, and was almost level 6 and then quit) I wanted to compete again so I just started back up and I am turning 15 on the 28th I am only level 4 but I still like it!

Do you have samples of what you've got? We will be needing some new music next season because we'll have a few new optionals, and maybe even some of the older ones will want new routines! I like stuff that's got a mix of hip-hop kinda, if you know what I mean...some more modern stuff, but I also do like some of the older stuff (one of my girls does her routine to "Hey, Mickey" and another to "Splish Splash"- both cute!

Ladies Division is modified optional basically, except you are only required to have 1 B on each event instead of 2, and it's for women who are ex-gymnasts, or coaches, or even high school-aged gymnasts who have been out of the sport for awhile. I competed on Sunday.

Hey. You have really good height for doing a full off a roundoff, and that is how I learned mine, but I tried a double full and you don't get nearly high enough. So if you practice round off/ back handspring/ fulls, it makes it so much easier. Just a little advice. =D
