Might that paintwork been done by The Fool Collective? I know they were one of a few at the forefront of hippie/psychedelic graphic design work in the late '60's, but they were pretty strong in Great Britain and Europe. It could've been one of the artists either in the U.S.( New York or California (San Francisco in particular, but I'm not sure - I kind of doubt it). Maybe it was one of Peter Brown's friends!

Yes, that's right. Jack played a Fender baritone in the early days of Cream. I read that a famous artist gave it a "psychedelic" paint job for him that took to long to dry. It was sticking to his shirt so he bought the Gibson EB-3 bass as a replacement. Good call.

Jimmy Webb is a hell of songwriter: One the greatest in the last 45-50 years!! I'm glad you brought that up, RenoRaider, because his name slipped my mind!! I think he also wrote MacArthur Park as well. He's right up there with some of other great songwriters of the century: Dylan, Lennon & McCartney, Burt Bacharach;Buck Owens, Hell, put him with the old school guys like Cole Porter and Johnny Mercer! Webb has the songbook that stacks up with any of them!!

I disagree n1ckotene. I love this song and I listened to this REM version immediately after listening to a Glenn Campbell version, and REM do the song justice. I believe a good tune will be a good tune always. Wichita Lineman is a classic tune, that will be good in pretty most, any format. Check out the Sergio Mendes Brasil 66 version of this song.... its immense. Glenn Campbell is the definitive version, but other covers have done the song proud.... in my opinion

I played in most of those sessions with Glen and PJ Watley during the early years. Zig Zog Bradley would always make us laugh whenever he would light his farts. That SOB was like Captain Caveman on steroids. I miss the session work as well as the wild bird seed parties we threw in the recording studio. Tommy is a great guitar player in his own way. I don't think Tommy could come close to playing this song on an electric like Johnny does. That said, Johnny probably can't touch the stuff that Tommy plays on his acoustic.

P.S. Bert Bachrach also proves the point about songwriters not suited to perform their own material. Like Webb, he struggles to hit the notes. That's why he always had very capable singers fronting his material. Webb simply cannot hit the notes. If this wasn't Jimmy Webb - let's say it was your neighbor singing, instead - you'd be cringing. When, in reality, it's really not that difficult to recognize vocal ability, I wonder why people are falling off their chairs about this performance.

It's usually good to hear the writer perform his or her own material. I have to admit that the vocals here are embarrassing: he simply does not have the voice for this material. The last 7-8 measures of this performance sound like Laura Nyro's piano playing. Other piano parts here sound like his song MacArthur Park -- perhaps too schmaltzy compared to the utter finesse of the vocals & arrangement of the Glen Campbell version. Still, one of the greatest songs written in popular music.

Except, he wrote the orchestra for "Macarthur Park," then was able to get Richard Harris to sing it. So, arrangements do add, but listen to his basic piano versions; the songs are simple, yet refined, and hold up due to their unique, captivating melody and chord changes. But Jimmy knew enough to have others record these songs. Reminds me of Dylan, in a way; his songs are often just played on guitar, but hold up so well due to their uncanny structure

Jimmy Webb has been fortuniate in that many of his simple songs were given beautiful arrangements by other song writers, for example this arrangement of "Wichita Lineman" by Sergio Mendes and Herb Alpert. Similarily with the song "MacArthur Park". The arrangements have taken Webb's songs to a higher level....in many ways it is the arrangements by other writers that have made his songs stand out. Granted, even Jimmy I think acknowledges his limited singing, and he never made a big career as a solo artist. But the renditions he did on "Ten Easy Pieces," shows the real feelings behind his songs. Other artists were able to convey those feelings - I think of Richard Harris and Art Garfunkel made wonderful recordings of Jimmy's songs. And seeing Jimmy perform a couple of months ago, he looked like he was enjoying himself, and remeniscing a little. But agreed, he's not the best singer

I used to think Spongebob was an immature, stupid kids' show until I finally decided to sit and watch an entire episode. I was surprised by the strange, surrealistic humour, and I found it to be a very enjoyable half hour. I am now a fan of the show. I wanna C you or ne marine, police officer, nurse or teacher stay up for 15 days and work a hurricane. Put a set of belt and hooks on and climb a 90 footer. Come save a persons life because they hit a 75 ft pole doing 90. with that 75 foot pole sitting over your car hanging by the transmission line! I bet none of those people can do that! ive been working my ass off to and dedicating alot of time trying to get into this profession. i absolutely love it and at 20 years old plan on spending many years doing it! atwaterfan ya ought to give it a try and maybe you would respect it. to all you fellow lineman im working my way to a journeyman and i highly highly respect you guys! im 26years old man from finland, i have worked in mostly 400kw lines now for six months, and i didnt go to school at all, i learned as i worked. but this job is not for everybody, you have to be able to work under pressure, sometimes very hard storms and extereme coldness( in finland specially), and you cant be afraid of heights, but if you are, you have to be mentally strong enough to overcome your fears. this is not a job for everybody. i can tell you that. but thath why they pay so well.. :)

the helicopter is not grounded, yet still not at the same potential as the energized line. The arc you see is raising the 'bird on a wire', so to speak, of the helicopter up to the potential of the line. If the path was to 'ground' you'd see one very large flash, one really big boom and a bunch of dead people...
