Unfortunately, most morbidly obese people eat due to psychological reasons. It's an addiction, and when you are treating somebody who is in this situation, they have to be mentally prepared as well as physically. I weight the same as I did in high school and I'm almost 50 now. It gets harder as we get older, your metabolism slows down. The key is exercise. You have to get out there and move. The "some people have a gland problem" argument is actually augmenting the problem. At the very least it is misapplied and at the most it is out right inaccurate. The human body was designed evolutionarily to survive on far fewer calories than Americans take in. One small candy bar can lift a 230 lb. object for over a half a mile. That is how efficiently we use food. But folks are never gonna decrease their calorie intake. It's just not gonna happen.

I don't really get what that has to do with his problem. Even if that is the way he got to that weight, it doesn't matter now. To other people, eat less and move more will only help people who are chubby. Anyone above that cannot move as much as average size people can, and are accustomed to the amount they eat. Stuff like this just doesn't get enough attention in the USA. This is becoming a SERIOUS problem that will soon take over smoking as the #1 preventable cause of death. Sure, some people have a genetic disposition to store fat but if you are overweight or obese, it is not your genetics. I like her hair it was like a peacock colour almost. One thing most people do is that don't change their entire lifestyle, they do the programs for awhile lose a little weight go off them and go back to their normal eating habits then gain the weight. You have to make a change for life. I agree with you to a certain point. I do think obesity can TURN INTO a lifestyle. But on its own it is also the form of a disease. Hence, obesity being put under a Disease label is right where it should be. And you are wrong about it being our faults. What about babies born with an abnormal weight? Should we blame them for being born fat? Is that their fault? You need to think about that accusation more carefully.

It's impossible for the body to store more calories than it burns and gland problem or not there is a minimum number of calories the body burns over a given time. Being a boy who had Cushing's was rare enough, but having it 3 times makes it even more so. I believe that diseases like this are deathly serious but also 1 in a 100,000. So if someone suspects an endocrinological disorder of any sort get it checked out. Back in '95 no endocrinologist in my area had even seen a case of Cushing's. Thanks to the internet, I trust most are informed today.

I had Cushing's when I was 5 years old. I gained enormous amounts of weight in 6 months, and to this day I remember the pain of being made fun of and ganged up on. I had Cushing's again when I was 12 and it stunted my growth. And this past summer I had a third surgery for the resurgence of the pituitary tumor. Surgery wasn't enough so I had stereotactic radiation at Stanford University.

As true as these things are, they're VERY VERY VERY VERY VERY VERY (hell, VERY^10000) RARE. Come on. Friggin 99.8% of obese people got there from overeating. Lots of obese people claim these rare diseases as an excuse, but very few actually have them. Note: I don't have anything against people for being overweight, I just can't stand when people make excuses or blame others for the way they are. I knew eight years ago that I had it. I diagnosed myself. I begged and begged doctors to screen me, since my ACTH was 586, my insulin 236, but cortisol was low. I've observed that for some people, being overweight and showing it is a perverse action of pride, just as some people who are underweight are proud of that. lol survival of the fittest. Our lifestyles are such that you don't need to be fit to survive. I go from my house to my car to my job to my car to my house. I only need to be fit if I am trying to win an Olympic medal. Studies have come out now showing that obese people aren't anymore likely to die at a young age than anyone else. Also, obese heart patients and patients with kidney disease have the lowest mortality rate. Society doesn't care about the health of fat people. They just hate fat.

its not about metabolic rate so much. Its not just the health benefits either...some foods contain massive amounts of Saturated Fat which. There are good fats and bad ones..eating a diet high in bad fats will also be high in calories...Calories=energy..eat more energy than you can burn and you end up gaining weight. But Hormonal imbalances can affect how your body processes sugars and fats therefore causing it to go straight to fat instead of being burned as energy. anyway just an fyi to u.

Hmmm.. I have a slight discomfort upon how she said you can have under 30 BMI and still be obese. Basically, she suggests there that obesity means people with health problems, and not specifically fat people. I've heard that many thin people had diabetes and heart disease as well. So it makes me wonder how many of these "obese" people, who make up the obesity epidemic, are actually fat..
