Anyway, I don't see why choice implies free will any more than it implies determinism (since neither position denies that we make choices). Maybe you define free will as simply "the ability to choose." If so I'd agree we have it. (I'd also think dogs and roosters have it.) Those aren't moral theories *per say*. If you said, it is 'better to avoid starvation' or 'immoral that people eat', then those might be applied to UPB to check for internal & external consistency (logic / evidence). So one could subject the statement 'IF people don't want to die, THEN they should eat' to UPB, but most moral theories, like 'murder is evil' usually don't need conditionals. I suppose 'IF you are a soldier, THEN murder is moral' can be subjected to UPB (and it would be epic fail).

Great posts teachmesomemusic. I am a praise and worship team member, musician and singles sunday school teacher. I must say that "reinterpreting" is a great way to put it in simple terms as to what the emergent church is doing. I think people have forgotten what God intended. In Revelation 22:versus 18 and 19, the answer to why the emergent church is wrong is very clear. There are other verses that dispell the emergent movement but these two versus came to mind when I saw. God Bless~

I'm sure you've heard scripture in emergent gatherings...some correctly taught and some incorrectly taught. It's a hallmark of the movement to mix the established truth of God's word with some newly formed emergent doctrine...Look, I love that the emerging movement in general is seeking to reach young people...but the leaders of the emergent stream are "reinterpreting" things that need no reinterpretation. Don't kno if you've been to many emergent church gatherings, but they are discussions often entirely around that beautiful scripture you mentioned. I've heard more scripture in emergent gatherings than in any of the protestant or catholic churches I've attended. As for "creating that path as they go," you're not naive enough to think that the first christians knew immediately how everything should work, right? Yes, they had scripture. "Box of hammers" is a questionable simile to use because hammers don't come in boxes nor are they regularly stored in large quantities in boxes. I'm an Objectivist who believes there are objective moral values, but the only way we can come close to understanding what is moral is to base them on specific axioms (an axiom regarding sufferings inherent badness for instance). Once we have the right axioms, we can apply empirical evidence to come to probable objective morals. As we acquire better evidence we can acquire closer knowledge of the moral.

I was saying that abortion is wrong only if everyone agrees it is wrong. In which case everyone would think that it was immoral, so yes if one still got a abortion even though they thought it was immoral, it would still be immoral to them. If objective moral realism is correct, then whether or not we agree something is immoral or not has absolutely no bearing on whether or not it actually is. On that view, objective moral facts exist, and there is a fact of the matter; if one of us holds moral beliefs that are contrary to that objective moral fact, then they are simply mistaken.

Im going to have to disagree with your definition of objective. It seems to me that if abortion is, in fact, really objectively wrong, then someone who obtains an abortion (even if they really want to) is behaving immorally. Their personal belief that obtaining an abortion is not immoral is simply false.

Objective can be defined in different ways. It seems to me when describing ethics that the definition of objective is something that can be agreed upon. If you think abortion is wrong, and I want an abortion then there is a conflict between us. If I list my reasons and they don't agree with me, and they list their reasons and I do not agree with them... then it is not objective. Unless one individual does not take into consideration the other viewpoint.

Interesting points. My only response would be what is called "The Argument from Queerness." It states that if moral values are in fact objective then they are of a very strange sort of ontology; utterly different from anything else we've encountered in the world. Put another way, I can understand what it would be like for physical objects to exist in space-time, but it's extremely difficult for me to imagine what it would be like for objective moral values to exist in the fabric of space-time.

slavery is wrong. this is a true statement. you may argue, 'that's only because you've grown up in a culture that has abjured slavery, and had you grown up in the 1790s america, you probably wouldn't agree'. i'd reply that had i grown up in a culture without telescopes, there'd be a gazillion objective truths i also wouldn't have access to - does this negate the reality of stars? with a firm nudge, moral anti-realism slips quickly into metaphysical anti-realism.

simply because my only way of seeing certain astronomical phenomena is through a telescope doesn't mean that these phenomena are merely telescopic, or that the phenomena i see with a telescope aren't objectively real. likewise, just because the only way i have of discerning moral phenomena are through my own perceptions (beliefs, conscience, etc.) does not mean these phenomena aren't objectively real.

Great question. :-) There are actually two different schools of thought concerning objective moral anti-realism (or moral error theory). Both schools think that moral utterances are non-referential, but they disagree as to whether or not that means they are false. "Global Falsity" is the view that all moral statements are false, whereas "Presupposition Failure" is the view that moral statements are simply not the type of utterance that has a truth value.

i contend that morals are like memes or diseases - self-replicating agents which use human beings as hosts. i'd thus highlight the importance of 'calls of conscience' - the points of infection after which one carries a new moral discourse; and i'd use this concept to help explain historical changes in morals, which i find it hard for error theory alone to account for. i'd agree though that there's no way to ground our moral beliefs - i.e., no achievable non-diseased state. so, where do i fit in?

Based on just this information in your video I would say I am probably an Expressivist in Meta-ethics. It seems to be the only perspective which emphasizes the primacy of the Other in Moral cognition.

I think morality is a multi-faceted phenomenon so I wouldn't say moral language is only an expression of emotion or only a presciption towards action, it consists of many different aspects.However I don't think a moral claim is the kind of claim that could ever be true.For me Nietzsche summarises it rather adequately when he says "There are no moral phenomena,only moral interpretations of phenomena".
