i heard this song when i was young and i love it. It stands for everything i understand. I feel so torn up often it was the only thing i could listen to last year when my grandma died. I'm 14 and still, this is my favourite song. I wish Johnny and June were still alive. they are an inspiration.

He absolutely loved the sounds of a snare, or something.. but he couldn't use one in the band as it would have taken away the whole "country" aspect.. so he would often put paper in between his strings and strum to get a drum sound. Why does everything gotta be better than the next thing seriously,Johnny Cash's music isn't exactly the kind of music I'm into but I think this is a respectable cover of the DM song. I've also heard Manson's cover and that one is awesome in my opinion. Agreed! Johnny Cash's is alright and maybe I'm just more used to the "original". It's just that Cash is usually GREAT at covering dark emotions or vibes like that of this song, yet it really falls short on the feeling/swagger when compared to the Tennessee Ernie Ford version. Don't get me wrong, Johnny Cash is incredible and I'm a big fan of his (ESPECIALLY his covers) but I personally think that he kinda rushed through this one.

Check out the Sun Records recording of the "Million Dollar Quartet" - Elvis, Johnny, Carl, and Jerry Lee messing around in the studio one day in Memphis probably around 55 or 56 (?) - never meant to be released so there are a lot of partial takes, but it's a pretty cool document and you realize that Elvis and Johnny's roots are so close (and even Ike Turner if you want to get down to it...) Gotta go to Memphis if you love country, rock and soul music - home to both Sun records AND Stax records.
