All that being said, the rewards so, so far outweigh the downsides. I get to see amazing places, beautiful architecture, meet amazing people, crazy characters and bond with people from utterly different cultures and then I get to share about it on the radio with a pretty nice and large audience! Endurance: you have to endure long bus trips, built for 30 people but filled w/50, plus chickens, chain smokers, windows closed and 95* heat all at the same time for 8-12 hours. You also have to endure different cultures, and learn how to thrive in them. For example: what happens in Asia isn't right or wrong, it's just 'Asia,' and the less developed the more intense! Also, violent puking, bad food, mosquito bites, multiple immunizations, malarial treatments and immigration delays and snafus.

How does global state differ from state inside an object? Methods using/changing member vars can also silently behave differently upon every invocation. I have the impression that this talk really just scratches the surface of a bigger issue: the problem of side-effects. For me one conclusion after watching this talk is: code with side effects is harder to test than code without side effects. Seems you're misusing the term abstraction. Passing objects to constructors and methods is more OO than having them find that information from the global environment. A good API have classes/methods that clearly state which (or what kind of (abstraction)) objects they need to be able to operate. How objects interact and relate is a crucial part of code structure. A lot of thought should go into that. Global state is an easy way out but ruins the code's reusability, adds hidden dependencies etc.

The part about the deceptive API is a good summary of why not to have global (mutable) state in any form. Singleton-ness is a big design decision to make, and should never be enforced by a class. It's better to let the user of the class make that decision. It may be tempting to let objects discover their environment through the ether that is the global name space. But objects should only know what you let them know. Interesting thought to make a separation of "Value" and "Service" objects.

It's only a representation, and one on a mercator projection to boot. The world is not flat, but the map is. If a plane was flying from Hawaii to Europe, for example, the shortest route is right over the north pole. I guess a plane should go straight up off the map, then reappear over Russia, but the simulation just shows the planes zipping along the far northern latitudes.

I always liked george carlin, but he's definitely got it wrong here. Human activities have poisoned the biosphere and "messed with nature" in all sorts of ways, causing accelerated extinctions. Because of all the pollution and stuff, the polar ice caps(right?) are melting & Polar bears are one of many species dying out because of it. The arctic isn't the only place it's happening. They're just spweing the word out consistantly to get people to stop littering. Throwing their trash in the oceans, streets, rivers, streams..ect. I think ridiculous, unnecessary objects like plastic bags need to be done away with. They will not get rid of themselves, and they are entirely inefficient. I think this "global warming" label basically just means a dtrive toward more efficient usage of energy (human energy and otherwise). The sad thing is it has always been the same percentage of people who said acid rain, the depleting ozone layer, etc were myths too and look where that got us... too late to fix all the dead lakes and now I have to wear bloody sun screen everytime I go out. This time round, I would rather at least try to do something to make the world a safer place than sit back , watch things get even worse for my kids, and pray for some God to fix the things about our world that we messed up.

No it can't do that. A deflationary trend would destroy the dollars purchasing power at once. A fractional reserve system has to expand credit exponentially to keep the money "owed" from catching up to newly created money in the system. You are acting like the fiat is tied to a stable commodity that it can deflate and inflate against. Its based on debt and only more debt can retain its value.
